Why Messi's version reshaped a decade
The mechanism was specific. When Messi dropped off the front line, Barcelona gained a spare man in central midfield, a 4-versus-3 advantage that let them control possession through the middle of the pitch rather than around it. At the same time, Messi's movement dragged a marking centre back with him, opening the channels for Eto'o and Thierry Henry to attack the space that back line had just vacated.
It worked because Barcelona had the passing quality to exploit the extra midfielder and the pace out wide to punish the gaps that followed. Messi went on to win four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards from 2009 to 2012 while playing the role, and by the end of that run, false nine had entered the sport's everyday vocabulary rather than remaining a niche tactical footnote.
