What Zimakk is for
Zimakk is an independent sports publication built around a single question: why did that happen the way it did?
Most sports coverage answers who won. That is the easy part, and it is already everywhere within seconds of the final whistle. The harder and more durable question is the one underneath — why a rule change quietly reorganised how a whole sport is played, why a squad that should be worse keeps beating squads that should be better, why a strategy that looks reckless from the outside is the correct read from the pit wall. Those answers do not expire at the end of the week, and they are what we write.
That focus decides everything else about the site. We are not a scores service and we do not try to be first. We would rather publish one piece that leaves you understanding a mechanism than five that leave you knowing a result you would have seen anyway.
What we cover
Six areas, chosen because each one rewards explanation:
- Football — tactical systems, academy and recruitment structures, ownership models, the regulations that shape squads
- Basketball — roster construction, the arithmetic of a salary cap, how a single rule shifted the geometry of the sport
- Tennis — surfaces, equipment, ranking mechanics, the shape of a calendar that never quite closes
- MMA and boxing — judging criteria, matchmaking, weight management, how fighters are paid
- Motorsport — aerodynamic regulation, tyre and fuel strategy, cost controls, endurance racing formats
- Olympic sport — how disciplines enter and leave the programme, why host cities changed their minds, national development systems
We go narrow on purpose. A publication that covers everything covers nothing carefully, and the reason we can write usefully about tyre degradation or offside technology is that we are not simultaneously trying to cover forty other sports.
How we decide what to publish
Every piece has to survive three questions before it is commissioned.
Will this still be true in a year? Evergreen explanation is the format we are built for, so we avoid anything whose value evaporates once a fixture is played. Can we explain the mechanism rather than assert the conclusion? If a piece cannot show how something works, it is an opinion wearing an explainer’s clothes, and we would rather not run it. And is there something specific to say? “Interesting topic” is not an angle.
Pieces that clear those questions are drafted, edited, and read again for accuracy before they go live.
Editorial standards
We hold ourselves to a short list of rules, and they are short because we intend to keep them.
- We do not invent specifics. Where a piece would need a figure we cannot stand behind, we describe the mechanism instead of guessing at a number. Rules and definitions are stated precisely; everything else is described qualitatively rather than fabricated with false precision.
- We separate explanation from prediction. Understanding why a system behaves the way it does is not the same as forecasting the next result, and we do not let one masquerade as the other.
- We correct in public. When we get something wrong, the piece is amended and the correction is noted rather than quietly edited away.
- We do not publish betting tips. Not as a legal hedge — it is genuinely not what this site is for.
- We label anything commercial. If a piece is sponsored, it says so plainly at the top, not in small print at the bottom.
Who writes here
Zimakk is written by a small editorial team working under house bylines, each covering a defined beat rather than chasing whatever is loudest that week. Every author page lists what that writer covers and links their published work, so you can read a beat rather than a feed.
The team is deliberately small. Depth per piece matters more to us than volume, and a small group holding consistent standards produces more of it than a large one would.
How the site is funded
Zimakk is free to read and paid for by advertising. We work with Google AdSense and other advertising partners, and those partners have no input into what we cover or what we conclude — the commercial side of the site and the editorial side do not meet.
We would rather say this plainly than bury it. If a page carries advertising, that is why, and the alternative would be a paywall we do not want to put in front of an explainer.
