A tactic older than the label
The false nine did not start in Catalonia. Hungary's Nandor Hidegkuti played as a deep-lying centre forward when England lost 6-3 at Wembley in 1953, a result still cited as the moment English football realized it had fallen behind continental tactical thinking. More recently, Roma coach Luciano Spalletti reinvented the role in the 2005-06 season, short of fit strikers and holding a squad built around a gifted attacking midfielder, Francesco Totti, whom he pushed into the middle rather than buy a traditional number nine.
Guardiola's version differed in scale rather than concept. Messi was not a makeshift solution to an injury crisis, he was the best player alive being given license to abandon his nominal position entirely, and Barcelona's entire structure was rebuilt to exploit the space he left behind.
