How Skateboarding Got Into the Olympics and Breaking Got Cut

Why skateboarding specifically got the nod

IOC president Thomas Bach was explicit about the motivation at the time, saying the IOC wanted to take sport to the youth rather than expect young people to come to it automatically, given how many entertainment options now compete for their attention. The data behind that concern was stark: the median age of the Olympic television audience had climbed to 48 for London 2012 and 55 for Sochi 2014, and IOC officials had flagged the aging viewership as a structural problem as early as 2014. Skateboarding, along with surfing and breaking later, was chosen partly because it already had a young, engaged following outside the Olympic system entirely.
