Why an Action Becomes a Default

Defaults in sport are the actions that survive every level of skill and every defensive answer. The pick-and-roll survives because its output is not a shot but a dilemma: two defenders, two threats, no coverage that concedes nothing. Improved shooting has raised the price of every solution, and a defence can only choose which of several bad outcomes it would rather live with. That is the durable reason the action never went away and never needed reinventing, only re-spacing.
