Why Soft Tissue Is the Weak Link

The injuries that fatigue is thought to influence most are not collisions. They are the muscle and tendon injuries that happen while an athlete is doing something ordinary at speed. The mechanism is straightforward in outline. Muscles absorb force as they lengthen under load, and that eccentric control is what protects a joint during a hard deceleration or a landing. When the tissue is fatigued, its capacity to absorb force drops, coordination degrades slightly, and load redistributes toward structures less suited to taking it.

A second pattern concerns change rather than volume. Sharp increases in workload after a lighter period appear to carry more risk than a consistently high load, which is one reason planned rest is designed as a modest reduction rather than a stop, and why a returning player is reintroduced gradually. The honest caveat is that injury is multi-causal. Genetics, prior injury, biomechanics, footwear, surfaces and simple accident all contribute, so no individual rest day can be shown to have prevented anything. The reasoning is about shifting probabilities across a career, which is precisely why it is unsatisfying to argue about in the context of one game.
