Scope of this policy
This policy applies to zimakk.com and describes how the operator of this website handles information about visitors. It covers the site itself, the email addresses published on our Contact page, and the third-party services the site depends on to run and to fund itself.
It does not cover other websites you reach by following a link from here. Once you leave, that site’s own policy applies.
What reaches us, and how
Almost everything the site collects arrives automatically as a by-product of serving pages.
Our hosting and content delivery infrastructure records the technical details every web request carries: an IP address, the page requested, the referring page where one is sent, a user-agent string identifying browser and operating system, approximate location derived from the network address, and a timestamp. Analytics tooling adds an aggregate picture on top of that — which pages are read, for roughly how long, on what kind of device, and how visitors move between pages.
Beyond that, the only personal information we hold is what you send us. If you email one of the addresses on the Contact page, we receive your address, your message, and whatever you chose to include in it.
We operate no accounts, no logins, no newsletter and no comment system, so there is no profile being assembled here and nothing for you to delete from one.
Why we process it
Four purposes, and nothing outside them:
- Delivering the site — serving pages, keeping them fast, and diagnosing faults
- Security — identifying abusive traffic, automated scraping and attempted attacks
- Understanding readership in aggregate — which subjects earn attention, so we can decide what to write next
- Funding the site through advertising — selecting and measuring the ads that pay for it
We do not sell personal information, and we do not pass it to anyone beyond the service providers described below.
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small file a site or a service it embeds stores in your browser. This site’s cookies fall into three groups.
Necessary — a small number required for the site to function and to remain secure. These cannot meaningfully be switched off while still using the site.
Analytics — used to count visits and understand which pages are read, in aggregate rather than individually.
Advertising — set by our advertising partners to select ads, cap how often you see the same one, and measure whether ads worked.
Where consent is legally required, a consent notice appears before non-essential cookies are set, and your choice is recorded and honoured. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s cookies and making a new selection, and your browser’s own settings let you block or delete cookies for this site independently of us. Blocking the necessary ones may break parts of the site.
Advertising, in detail
The advertising on Zimakk is served by Google, using Google AdSense, and by other advertising partners. Because this is the mechanism most readers actually want explained, here is what it involves.
Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and to other sites on the internet. Those partners operate under their own privacy policies and receive the technical information described above through the ad request itself — they do not receive your email address or the contents of anything you have written to us.
You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google at Google’s Ads Settings. Broader industry opt-out tools are available at aboutads.info and Your Online Choices. Opting out does not remove advertising from the site; it makes the ads less relevant to you.
Service providers
The site runs on third-party infrastructure and services, each acting on our behalf and each with access only to what its function needs: hosting and content delivery, analytics, advertising delivery and measurement, and email. Some of these providers operate outside your country, including outside the European Economic Area. Where personal information is transferred internationally, it is done under the safeguards those transfers legally require.
How long we keep things
Server and security logs are retained only as long as they are useful for diagnostics and abuse prevention, then discarded. Analytics data is retained in aggregate form. Email correspondence is kept while it remains relevant — a correction thread is kept as a record of the correction — and deleted when it is not.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how it is used, to receive a copy in a portable form, and to withdraw consent you previously gave. Residents of the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have these rights under data protection law; residents of some other jurisdictions, including California, have comparable ones.
To exercise any of them, write to [email protected]. We will respond within the period the applicable law sets, and within one month at the outside. We may need to ask a question to confirm the request comes from you, and writing from the address the request concerns is the fastest route.
If you believe we have handled your information improperly, you are entitled to complain to your local data protection authority. We would rather you raised it with us first, but that route is yours regardless.
Children
Zimakk is written for an adult general audience. It is not directed at children, we do not knowingly collect information from children, and we do not knowingly serve advertising targeted at them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to the privacy address and we will delete it.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be flagged on the site rather than made quietly.
